'Living the Dream' Barking and Dagenham Trust is a new independent Trust which was launched in July 2007, to support local sportsmen and women.

The Trust will be responsible for raising money through various means such as donations and fundraising events. The money will then be distributed to local talented individuals to help them develop their sporting talent and their dreams of being part of the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics and other international competitions.

The Trust comprises representatives from the business community, the voluntary sector and Barking and Dagenham Council.

The borough currently boasts over 20 young potential Olympians who represent their respective national squads as well as being world record holders, world champions and European champions.

These youngsters are the pride of Barking and Dagenham, and we want to help them achieve their dream by supporting them, whether it be by providing equipment or assistance with training and travel costs.

In order to compete with the best, these youngsters have to travel all over the world to take part in competitions and we want to show them that the local community is fully behind them.

Imagine the pride we will all feel when July 2012 comes and a number of competitors from Barking and Dagenham proudly march into the Olympic Stadium in Stratford as part of the Great Britain team, achieving their dream to compete on home soil in the greatest sporting event in the world.

Everyone can help and there are lots of ways to do so, These could include making a donation, organising an event or sponsoring an event that the Trust is organising. You can donate prizes or become a friend of the Trust by completing the application form on our enquries page. We will keep you informed about our work and the progress of our young sports stars via this website.

The Trust is working in partnership with the Dagenham Post and will therefore ensure that the press is informed of your support, and where possible will involve our sports stars in any event organised or presentation to the Trust.

If you would like more information about the Trust, or how to make a donation, please contact our Treasurer Steve Thompson at Dagenham and Redbridge Football Club on 020 8592 1549.

Help us to ensure that the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics leave a lasting legacy for the community of Barking and Dagenham.

Barry Kirk, Editor of the Dagenham Post

'Living the Dream' is one of the most important ideas to come out of this caring borough. Material support for up and coming athletes is something people only think about either watching medal ceremonies or bemoaning the lack of sufficient quality competitors. So a scheme that gives the chance to actively support our Olympic hopefuls is something that we all need to get involved in, and the Barking and Dagenham Post is very keen to be among those cheering them on.

The road to the 2012 Olympic Games is going to be a long and arduous one for our contenders and they deserve every ounce of support.

The Post has been publishing regular updates on this elite group of young people, not only to give them encouragement, but also to publicise their achievements and show how proud the people of Barking and Dagenham are of them all.
